Michael Bublé and a Sixth Grade Teacher Share a Memorable Duet
Few individuals can claim they’ve encountered one of their heroes. Some receive that coveted backstage pass, or push through the audience for a handshake and a photo; these are genuinely memorable experiences for fans. However, one fan accomplished what many fans aspire to: perform alongside Michael Bublé in a crowded arena.
This is precisely what Mrs. Diana Fairbanks, a sixth-grade teacher, accomplished at Michael Bublé’s arena performance at Oakland’s Oracle Arena in 2019. In this heartfelt instance, Fairbanks appears unaffected by the surrounding audience as Bublé agrees to her duet request. Together, they perform Disney’s “A Whole New World” in a beautiful harmonious duet.
Initially, Bublé appears to believe that Fairbanks—holding a sign aloft—is merely attempting to catch his eye and express her admiration (as most fans would likely do when in such proximity to Bublé).
He was then amazed to see the reverse side of the sign, which was a request for an on-stage duet with the renowned Canadian singer. The audience had no idea they were about to experience a genuinely remarkable moment.
The audience erupted in applause as he agreed to her proposal, and Fairbanks showcased her angelic voice right from the start. Despite his iconic reputation, Bublé reveals in this clip that, at heart, he is just like anyone else, stumbling over his words during the duet. Nonetheless, he continues to offer superb harmonic support to Fairbanks, who successfully matches Bublé’s pitch by the song’s conclusion. They even lock eyes for reassurance as they find the correct pitch together.
Michael Bublé is globally recognized as an American vocal legend. His vast original discography stands out on its own, but another facet of Bublé’s charm is his talent for revitalizing forgotten songs from the past and adding his unique twist to them. One of his most celebrated covers is Nina Simone’s timeless “Feeling Good,” which 15-year-old fan Sam Hollyman had the opportunity to perform alongside Bublé during his concert at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena.
Interactions with fans are among the most memorable and unforeseen experiences we can have at music events. Collaborations with guest artists are fortunate surprises, but there’s an exhilarating aspect to a fan having the opportunity to perform with one of their favorite artists.
A notably enchanting moment occurred when Yayo Sanchez, dressed with makeup resembling Kiss’ Gene Simmons, was called on stage by Dave Grohl during a Foo Fighters concert to play guitar. Not only did young Sanchez flawlessly perform their iconic song “Monkey Wrench,” but following an electrifying performance, Grohl was left speechless and started to bow to the young guitarist. It’s rare to find greater commendation elsewhere.
