When Vince Gill was asked not to sing about Jesus, here’s what he did

Vince Gill, an acclaimed country musician, has released over 20 albums and received numerous awards, including more Grammys than any other male country artist. Gill gained prominence in 1979 with the country rock band Pure Prairie League and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

Forty years into his career, Gill remains a highly sought-after musician, recently performing with Little Big Town at the Grand Ole Opry. During this performance, Gill faced a dilemma as a devoted Christian, given the prohibition on singing religious songs, especially those mentioning Jesus.

Undeterred, Gill chose to creatively defy the restriction. Instead of abandoning his faith, he performed “Why Me Lord,” a deeply moving song written by Kris Kristofferson in 1972 and famously covered by Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.

Gill’s performance received a standing ovation, highlighting his courage to stay true to his beliefs and artistic integrity. His actions affirmed his rightful place in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
