After 10 Years, Phil Collins Delivers an Unforgettable Drum Performance Full of Emotion and Power!

Phil Collins has been facing significant challenges recently, with various health issues hindering the legendary “In The Air Tonight” artist from performing or even playing the drums he is renowned for. Nevertheless, Collins recently experienced the joy of playing his iconic Gretsch tom kit once more after over a decade in a new video presented by Drumeo.

The 73-year-old Genesis superstar has been dealing with health problems since around 2007, when he sustained a serious spinal injury. This injury led to a condition known as drop foot, which makes lifting the front part of the foot difficult. Additionally, he suffers from chronic neck pain, a common issue among drummers. These physical challenges have naturally made it hard for him to play the drums.

Phil Collins Briefly Tests His Old Drum Kit in New Drumeo Documentary

Drumeo interviewed Collins for the new documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First. The documentary explores Collins’ legacy as one of the most iconic drummers of his time and candidly discusses his physical limitations and how he has managed them. A significant portion of the film features Collins alongside his musically talented son, Nic Collins, who is the drummer for Better Strangers.

Drumeo shared a clip from the documentary showing Nic Collins and Drumeo host Brandon Toews working to assemble Collins’ long-unused drum kit. This kit is well-known as the one Collins used during his legendary 1992 We Can’t Dance Tour with Genesis.

Once the kit was assembled, Nic took the first turn to play it. He did an impressive job, even performing the famous drum fill from Collins’ 1981 hit song “In The Air Tonight.” It’s important to note, however, that this particular kit is not the one Collins used during the original recording of the song.

In the video, Nic mentioned that the drum setup required his father to lean forward to play correctly. He speculated that this positioning may have contributed to Collins’ poor posture and neck pain in his later years.

Towards the end of the video clip, Collins approaches his old drum kit and sits down behind it. He taps the drums a few times before saying, “That’s enough of that,” and stands up.
